Field Day

January 22, 2025

Ham radio field day is an annual event for amateur radio operators to practice emergency communications preparedness. It’s usually held on the fourth weekend of June and can involve thousands of radio amateurs gathering in remote locations with their clubs, groups, or friends.

Field day can include:
  • Picnics and campouts
  • Emergency response practice
  • Informal contests
  • Demonstrating amateur radio to the public and organizations
  • Improving skills
  • Logging contacts

The original purpose of field day was to show that amateur radio operators could provide emergency communications in remote locations for 24 hours. Participants try to contact as many stations as possible on different HF bands and bands 50 MHz and above, while learning to operate in less than ideal conditions. Stations keep score based on the number of contacts they make in a given time, but the score is more about measuring efficiency and effectiveness in an emergency than winning. Participants can also earn bonus points by inviting local emergency services and politicians to their field day site.
