What is HF?

In ham radio, HF stands for high-frequency, which is a band of radio waves with wavelengths ranging from 100 to 10 meters, or 3 to 30 megahertz (MHz). It’s also known as the decameter band or decameter wave.

HF radio is ideal for long-range communication. It’s used by many industries, including commercial airlines, as well as government agencies like the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Defense. HF radio is also used by amateur radio operators.

HF radio is more powerful than UHF radio, transmitting with 100 watts of power compared to UHF’s 5 watts. This means that HF radio waves are also more powerful.
High frequency (HF) is the ITU designation for the band of radio waves with frequency between 3 and 30 megahertz (MHz).
