What is Moonbounce?

Back

Moon bounce, also known as Earth-Moon-Earth (EME) communication, is a radio communication technique that uses the moon to reflect radio waves from Earth to an Earth-based receiver. This allows for communication beyond line of sight, potentially between people on opposite sides of the world.

EME is a simple but effective technique that’s accessible to many amateur radio experimenters. The popularity of EME has increased with the development of digital modes like JT65 and QRA64, which are more sensitive and allow for smaller antennas and lower transmit power.

Some things to consider when using EME include:
  • Signal frequency
Signals appear about 300 Hertz higher when the moon is rising and lower when it’s setting.
  • Polarization shift
The Earth’s magnetic field and other factors can cause polarization shift, which can make it difficult for people using different types of antennas to hear each other.
Earth–Moon–Earth communication (EME), also known as Moon bounce, is a radio communications technique that relies on the propagation of radio waves from an Earth-based transmitter directed via reflection from the surface of the Moon back to an Earth-based receiver.
